1. About the App
The Munro Companion is a mobile application for tracking completion of the 282 Scottish Munros, hills in Scotland with a height of at least 914m (3,000ft). These terms govern your use of the app and its features.
2. Acceptable Use
You agree to use the app and its social features responsibly. You must not:
- Share offensive, abusive, threatening, or illegal content through social features, including in posts, photos, profiles or hazard reports
- Impersonate other users or misrepresent your identity
- Post false hazard reports, or vote on reports to mislead other walkers
- Attempt to interfere with the app's services or other users' data
- Use the app for any purpose other than its intended hill-walking and tracking functionality
We have zero tolerance for objectionable content and abusive users. Every post, profile and hazard report can be reported from within the app. Reports about shared completions and hazard reports are reviewed within 24 hours; if a report has not been reviewed by then the item is hidden automatically. Reports about profiles are reviewed manually. We remove content that breaks these terms and may suspend or delete the accounts of users who post it, without notice.
3. Safety and Liability
Weather and navigation data are provided for informational purposes only. They should not be relied upon as your sole source of safety information when walking in the Scottish hills.
You are responsible for your own safety on the hills.
Always:
- Carry a paper map and compass, and know how to use them
- Check the forecast conditions before setting out
- Carry appropriate equipment, clothing, food, and water for the conditions
- Tell someone your route and expected return time
- Turn back if conditions deteriorate
- Follow the Scottish Outdoor Access Code
Weather data is provided by Open-Meteo and may not reflect actual summit conditions. GPS accuracy varies and the app may lose signal in remote areas. Route information is computer-generated and cannot account for all terrain hazards, path closures, or seasonal conditions. Hazard reports are posted by other users and are not verified by us.
The app is provided "as is" without warranty of any kind. We are not liable for any loss, injury, or damage arising from use of the app, its navigation features, its weather data, or hazard reports posted by other users.
4. User Content
You retain ownership of all content you create in the app, including notes, photos, and completion records.
By sharing completions, profile details or hazard reports through the app, you grant a limited, non-exclusive licence to display that content within the app to other users. You can revoke this by unsharing individual completions or deleting hazard reports. We may remove any shared content that breaks section 2.
5. Companion Account and Data
The app uses an optional Companion Account, linked to Sign in with Apple, to back up and sync your data across devices and to power social features. Your account data is stored securely on our servers in the European Union and the same account serves The Wainwright Companion.
We are not responsible for data loss due to service interruptions or account issues, though we take reasonable steps to maintain data integrity.
You can request a copy of your data at any time by emailing support@munrocompanion.co.uk; we respond within one month. You can delete your data at any time from Settings.
6. Account Deletion
You can delete your account and its data at any time using the Delete Account option in Settings. Deletion is immediate and permanent. Used in this app, it removes this app's data: your completions, walks, routes, ratings, bookmarks, achievements, hazard reports, shared content and photos, and the app's settings and device tokens, from your device and from our servers, and disconnects Sign in with Apple for this app. Your Companion Account is shared with The Wainwright Companion, so it is not deleted while another of our apps still holds data for you, and your profile, follows, blocks and reactions stay. When you delete from the last app that holds your data, everything is removed, including your profile, follows, reactions, the blocks you made and the account itself. Three things are not removed: copies in our daily database backups, which are overwritten within 7 days; any reports you filed about other users' content, which we keep as a moderation record with your identity removed; and a keyed hash of your Sign in with Apple identifier, which may be kept for as long as another user's block of you stands, so it can be re-applied if you create an account again.
7. Purchases and Subscriptions
The Munro Companion is free to download and has a free tier. Some features need a paid tier. Companion+ is a one-off, non-consumable in-app purchase. Companion Pro is an auto-renewing subscription, offered monthly or annually.
Payment is charged to your Apple Account when you confirm the purchase. A subscription renews automatically at the end of each period unless you cancel it at least 24 hours before the end of the current period. You can manage or cancel your subscription at any time in your App Store account settings. You can restore your purchases from within the app. Deleting your account does not cancel a subscription, because subscriptions are billed by Apple; cancel it in your App Store account settings.
Purchases are processed by Apple, and refunds are handled by Apple under its policies. Prices are shown in the app and on the App Store before you buy, and may change. If the price of a subscription changes, you will be told in advance, as Apple requires.
8. Termination
We reserve the right to remove accounts or content that violate these terms, or to suspend access to social features for users who misuse them.
9. Changes to These Terms
We may update these terms from time to time. Changes will be reflected on this page with an updated date. Continued use of the app after changes constitutes acceptance of the updated terms.
10. Governing Law
This licence is governed by the laws of England and Wales. If you are a resident of the European Union, European Economic Area, or Switzerland, the law of your usual place of residence applies to any dispute arising from this licence, and any such dispute shall be subject to the courts of that place of residence.

12. App Store Licence Terms
The following terms apply specifically to your use of The Munro Companion when downloaded from Apple's App Store. They supplement the terms above and are required by Apple Inc.
a. Acknowledgement
This licence is concluded between you and Paul Dickenson ("the Developer"), not with Apple Inc. ("Apple"). The Developer, not Apple, is solely responsible for the Application and its content.
b. Scope of Licence
The Developer grants you a non-transferable licence to use the Application on any Apple-branded products that you own or control, subject to the Usage Rules in Apple's App Store Terms of Service. You may not distribute or make the Application available over a network where it could be used by multiple devices simultaneously, and you may not transfer, sublicense, or otherwise make the Application available to any third party.
c. Maintenance and Support
The Developer is solely responsible for providing maintenance and support services for the Application. Apple has no obligation whatsoever to provide any maintenance or support services with respect to the Application.
d. Warranty
The Developer is solely responsible for any product warranties, whether express or implied by law. In the event of the Application failing to conform to any applicable warranty, you may notify Apple, and Apple will refund the purchase price of the Application. To the maximum extent permitted by applicable law, Apple will have no other warranty obligation with respect to the Application. All other claims, losses, liabilities, or damages arising from a failure to conform to any warranty are the Developer's sole responsibility.
e. Product Claims
The Developer, not Apple, is responsible for addressing any claims by you or any third party relating to the Application or your use of it, including: (i) product liability claims; (ii) any claim that the Application fails to conform to any applicable legal or regulatory requirement; and (iii) claims arising under consumer protection, privacy, or similar legislation.
f. Intellectual Property Rights
In the event of any third-party claim that the Application or your possession and use of it infringes that third party's intellectual property rights, the Developer, not Apple, will be solely responsible for the investigation, defence, settlement, and discharge of that claim.
g. Legal Compliance
You represent and warrant that: (i) you are not located in a country subject to a U.S. Government embargo or designated by the U.S. Government as a "terrorist supporting" country; and (ii) you are not listed on any U.S. Government list of prohibited or restricted parties.
h. Third-Party Terms
When using the Application you must comply with any applicable third-party terms of agreement. For example, you must not be in violation of your wireless data service agreement when using the Application's GPS or data features.
i. Third-Party Beneficiary
Apple and Apple's subsidiaries are third-party beneficiaries of this licence. Upon your acceptance of these terms, Apple has the right to enforce this licence against you as a third-party beneficiary.
